Spalling:
Pieces of brick noticed on the roof is usually an indication of spalling. Spalling occurs when brick absorb water during the warm summer months and when the water freezes in the winter. The water expands breaking apart the brick. Spalling is usually cosmetic until it reaches a approximate depth of 1/3 the brick. The brick can either be waterproofed to prevent further damage or the entire brick effected may be removed and replaced.
